I beg you're pardon?

I drew this along with the assignment I gave to 7th graders. Students keep asking me "why does it look evil?" That's probably a good sign, the fact that they're asking must mean that I don't actually look this crabby all the time.

Playing solitaire on her ipod

Pencil and graphite on 24x18 newsprint. I've been teaching my Drawing class about gesture sketches, gradually moving them from 20 minute drawings down to 30 seconds, and now back up to 15-20 minute figure studies, alternating between graphite and charcoal. Generally I circulate around so that I can help students when they need it or make suggestions, but this morning I drew with them. I probably shouldn't have posted this because I think it shows just how rusty I am.

Age of Reason

A new treatment (digital) of an old drawing (from college) of a bust of Benjamin Franklin. From television to texting, from 24 hour news cycles to never-ending campaign cycles, 30 second sound-bytes and incivility... I imagine that our founders would be disappointed in how post-literate, anti-intellectual, uncompromising and unreasonable America has become.

Distortion

Bookmark and Share
Here's a page from the old sketchbook. I'm trying to teach my students that sometimes in order to draw something realistic, you need to be able to perceive the abstract shapes in the things you look at in real life. This exercise features the distortions created when light is refracted by glass and water. Using a simple spoon helps to emphasize the variations of values (shading).

Gesture drawings

Today I bagan having Drawing II students work on gesture drawings. Some of our goals being to be able to capture angles, weight, movement and motion rapidly, as well as to become better at blocking out compositions quickly so that eventually we will be able to do longer, deatailed figure drawings of models. These are a couple of sketches I did of our student model, Sasha today.

Still working

I think it's getting closer, maybe I'll be able to finish it up on Monday.

Megan

Since I kind of get ahead of the students, right now that's on our sketches of the full skeleton, when they don't need my help, I started drawing them. Here's Megan, a pretty good drawer herself and a cheerleader last football season. Her new lip ring put an end to that according to State Association rules. Maybe she'll tryout for mascot.

Sasha Lynn

Now that we're done with the skull, and before we go on to the whole skeleton and then figure drawing, I'm having my class work on portraiture. The idea being that knowing the skull structure will now inform and advise our drawing of faces. So here is my sketchbook page of Sasha. All pencil & graphite, no charcoal yet. This isn't the best photo for comparison because her hair is down (and different) and her hands are on her face and she's smiling more widely...but hopefully it gives you SOME idea of how accurate or inaccurate my drawing is. I realize I'm a long way from perfect- but hey, that's why I'm not a full time professional draw-er, I'm just a 7-12 Art teacher and part time aspiring cartoonist.

Skull Drudgery

High school Drawing II students working on their charcoal drawings of the skull. After this we'll go back to portrait drawing from models, then we'll draw the whole skeleton and springboard from that into both gesture sketches and figure drawings from models. Don't worry, no nude models in public high schools- I promise. Below you can witness the progression of my skull drawing:

getting closer

I'd rather work from the model instead of a photo, but my Intro Drawing 2nd hr. were all working on a still life, so I made some more adjustments before Drawing 2 has Angie to model for us 4th hr. I don't know... now she 's kind of looking like my friend Cindy Murphy from college.
Eventually it will look like Angie.
